The Chance to Become Scholarship
Most of us at one time or another have been given a “Chance” by someone in our lives to become what we are now. That has been our mission with this scholarship program since the beginning in 2000. Providing students with educational opportunities in life they may not otherwise have had.
The Creation – Eligibility
Recipients are chosen based on very non-traditional criteria, with grades playing only a minor role in the process. A student might be selected because they possess a special skill or a unique talent. They might be someone who has overcome challenges. They may simply be a student who tries their best at whatever they do. In short, this scholarship is intended to include a wide range of high school seniors.
The Success – History
Since its inception in 2000, the Columbia Learning Center has awarded over 289 scholarships, valued at $5,000 each. That is over $1.4 million that has been awarded throughout all five Columbia County high schools!
The Future
When a student accepts this scholarship, they make a pledge to pay it forward by helping another student in the future. This may be through mentoring, volunteering or supporting the Chance to Become Scholarship financially. Giving back promotes lifelong learning and strengthens our communities.
The Donors
The money for these scholarships comes from anonymous donors and from the Black Tie & Blue Jeans auction. As donors, we believe that we were given “A Chance to Become” and we want to return that good fortune by helping a young person with this jump-start in life.
